Lick My Decals Off Baby

Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band advertised their  4th record, on television late at night circa 1970 by making a commercial.  Click here to see. So many people love him but I never tuned in exactly until having myself a little youtube marathon this evening.

Numerous enjoyable pieces I listened/watched, especially memorable was David Letterman asking him what Captain Beefheart meant,  he answered     “A beef in my heart against the society”, then he gave an animal rights example about pelicans murdered in twisted ways near Los Angeles.

Lick My Decals Off Baby was a way of saying to judge things by their merit vs. their association. Obama was 9 years old when his personal favourite Beefheart record was released by Frank Zappa.

  1. Trout Mask Replica (pictured) was an amazing Zappa-produced double album of the best Magic Band Beefheart had. Lick My Decals Off Baby was the follow up and, while darned good, wasn’t the same manic virtuosity as Trout. IMO. Of Course. Both released on Zappa’s own Straight Records. Fast and bulbous.
