Some songs are like a big old beautiful tree you come upon and marvel at the branches and the leaves, the bark and the fruit, the majesty and power.

First heard this Zombies song when I was a kid going through my older brother’s records and it slayed me. No idea what the lyric was about until a few years later and then it confused me, it seemed like it was about a guy writing to his girlfriend who’s in jail, reassuring her he still loves her and has romantic dreams for their future…made no sense. What could this actually be about? A few years later I figured it out. It’s about a guy writing to his girlfriend who’s in jail, reassuring her he still loves her and has romantic dreams for their future.

Makes me think about recent years where transgender issues are more in the news making us think about gender roles and why whatever is considered ordinary is or isn’t.

Especially kills me when they reduce everything to acapella sculptural moments then explode back to the pop with urgency – I guess because she’s finally getting out of jail.
