More so they do it underground in Europe. Often I don’t remember, but then I look up and I do. Many wires get the electricity into each home. Like if it didn’t exist, if someone described what that would be like, I bet afterward nobody would agree to this visual pollution. So it is. Weaving through trees, century old branches received chainsaw surgery, even empty spaces have some permanent blobs suspended between poles. What can’t I stand more, this or popular songs based on loops? 25 years of looping pedals is, to me, more interesting than the music. I presume being broke is a major part of the story, the ease of working alone vs. with a group. That’s a little bit interesting but hearing a voice go pow pow boom boom is only neat for 6 seconds but the song is 4 minutes. People hooked on novelty, like celebrating an air guitarist instead of Charlie Christian’s fingers on strings. So much American Idol aesthetic in music made with loops, bores me like all unvarying repetitions. And my students gush over these songs as though they represent top songwriting achievement. I guess it does for them but for me feels like awarding Monsanto’s new red wine because it tastes great and didn’t use real grapes.
