Richter: The Enigma

There were a hundred amazing moments in the documentary about Sviatoslav Richter (Richter: The Enigma). In one instance he talks about pianist Maria Yudina, who was Stalin’s favourite pianist (whatever that means) and during a concert at the height of World War 2 she played a program that included Bach but made it all punchy. After when asked her what’s going on with her relationship to the music and she replies “We’re at war!” Another great part is when he realizes a KGB agent is following him, he approaches and introduces himself and asks which stop the agent is getting off at and generally fucks back at the system trying to fuck with him. And another memorable moment is when he bumps into Shostakovich on the subway and invites him over for tea.
