Pleasing Yourself

Was listening to an old episode of the BBC show desert island discs, Salmon Rushdie recorded in 1989 prior to the release of The Satanic Verses. At one point the interviewer asked him about his first book which only sold 900 copies and he explained following that failure he wrote Midnight’s Children to satisfy himself first disregarding whether it meant anything to anyone else. A lot of powerful work happens that way or to put it another way, a lot of shit work happens from trying to please the audience first.
