At Berklee, they actually have a term for it. They call it (not joking here) ‘avoid notes…’ The goal is to never play a solo with an ‘avoid’ note, thus ensuring you get an A+. Once you’ve graduated with your A+ and 100,000 in debt, you can either get an MBA, or go to law school to pay it off.
This ensures that you will be well prepared to play absolutely note perfect solos at the office Christmas party each year while you dazzle the other partners of the firm with your prodigious talent.
I would ‘avoid’ jazz school altogether.
