Watched a father guilt trip his son in a music store. Wanted the kid to believe they can only become a musician if they follow their father’s ideas of what’s the right way vs. the wrong way, something like that. I remember the book in grade 9, the feeling near the end, George lifts a gun while describing to Lenny the beautiful future they will have and the nearby mob is searching to string him up, an eye for an eye. Is it better for George to murder Lenny or the mob? Should Lenny be free because he doesn’t know what he did or should he pay with his life for committing murder? I wonder if better mental health outcomes would result if the school system not only read things like Of Mice and Men but went even further and taught kids to question how right and wrong are inventions.
