I’m teaching a senior. Sometimes his fingering is awkward because his ring finger depresses keys at the same time as his pinky even though only the pinky is required, even though the unnecessary addition of his ring finger can lead to messes but trying to get him to do it more efficiently does not seem possible, as though his hands are wired up this way. I like this problem and all the thoughts it conjures up of teachers I’ve met or studied with would would never adjust their method. Probably all of them would have told Django Reinhardt they can’t fit him in if he keeps contorting his fingers like that.
