tightrope

In some recent teaching instances, with a 6 year old girl or a 55 year old man both times the solution to proceeding efficiently was to back up and make the example simpler. If they couldn’t do the sequence how it was first presented, then break it down further, a more incremental way of the same gesture. Just the 1rst 2 notes, just the first 3 notes, over and over for 10 minutes. These are new pathways for the brain. Sometimes I forget I already know how to walk a tightrope without a net but beginners are only thinking about the ground, and why shouldn’t they? Have to start again with just a small movement.
