“They said you can rap about anything except for Jesus, that means guns, sex, lies, video tape, but if I talk about God my record won’t get played”.
I like the surprise when artists who straddle their pop position suddenly sing religious ideas. A nice disorientation from the usual banal ideas of modern music. Like when George Harrison sung, “give me peace on Earth, give me light, give me life, keep me free from birth”. Lately I’m re-listening to Kanye West’s Jesus Walks. Brilliant layers, styles and samples challenging musically and lyrically. I bet the last lines, where he sings that he will be rejected by radio and the hip hop community, for the very ideas he is singing about, did not come true partially because he beat them to it by calling them out in the song.
