lime in the coconut

sometimes, there is a question I ask people I’m recording and often the same question comes up in songwriting class. not trying to upset anyone but sometimes people get awkward when bobby gets interrogative. the question is “what is this song about?” sometimes, I sense the question does valuable work for the songwriter. the other day someone played a song, I couldn’t follow what it was about. after I asked the class, “does anyone know what that song was about?” …crickets.

one student became defensive on the songwriter’s behalf. that student said i should not be probing along these lines because some songs don’t mean anything. I guess that’s fair, if we were car salespeople at a car convention but it is a songwriting class, right? it isn’t the craziest of ideas to ask people what a song is about in a songwriting class. i want my songs understood.
