being here

Many young musicians I’ve worked with in these song writing class, are trying to solve the problem of making a hit. They believe a hit means you are super rich and your life becomes super easy. My attempts at pointing out music making is its own reward goes down unimpressively. Nonetheless, I like showing them awesome artists who remain obscure or mediocre artists that are super rich. I think the music industry works differently than they do. I’m not trying to say great artists don’t succeed or not so amazing artists never do, that happens too. Basically, Chauncey Gardner called it, “You throw tomato seeds into the Earth and some will come up, some won’t, some will be wonderful, some will be sickly. Expecting success just because you planted them is not as useful as is thinking about the conditions that could mitigate obstacles.”
