The announcer last week, of a high school girls basketball game where one team took a knee during the national anthem and then he went off in a series of racist remarks thinking he was off mic. Later made a public apology, claimed it was his diabetes, his sugar was spiking and that’s why he made those remarks. Someone isn’t guilty of a crime because they were drunk type of excuse. Actually, the asshole in San Francisco who murdered Harvey Milk had that type of argument too, the twinkie defense it was called. There is something about making no excuse that is more valuable for all. Hardly ever come upon people willing to do that when they’ve been caught. In the Beatles song from Sgt. Pepper MacCartney wrote it’s getting better all the time and Lennon added can’t get no worse.
He also wrote the lines ‘I used to be cruel to my woman / I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved’ . I looked it up earlier wondering who wrote that line, McCartney or Lennon, and was surprised to read in one of his last interviews before his murder, his commitment to not pretending or defending, “I was a hitter. I couldn’t express myself and I hit. I fought men and I hit women. That is why I am always on about peace, you see. It is the most violent people who go for love and peace. Everything’s the opposite. But I sincerely believe in love and peace. I am a violent man who has learned not to be violent and regrets his violence. I will have to be a lot older before I can face in public how I treated women as a youngster.”
