notes after the first year

a man wrote a song about murder, about multiple murders he heard about as did most of the people in the country where he lived when the tragic event became known. many years later he was at school and a fellow classmate upon hearing he wrote such a song said it was very unthinking and exploitative for him to write about someone else’s experience, she said she would never write such a song without asking for permission first from people connected to the event. following this it was clear to him, that from her view and some other students as well, the impulse to make art that might contribute towards healing painful events, to sing about something that didn’t happen directly to you, like you being in the same room at the same time, is offensive. so he made certain not to let her hear the song about men who commit acts of violence against women. then they lived happily ever after in distinctly different bubbles.
