I attended Daniel Brooks play about his life, living with lung cancer and attending a Vipassana retreat. I wrote him after to get the name of the book he referenced – Fatelessness by Imre Kertész. Both of them in altered states of death’s imminency, unlike the sleep walking and wondering what next on Netflix, for many others. I liked his play a lot, how on stage he told his story using his theatre relationship. Thought about the brilliant premise to Guy Maddin’s My Winnipeg and the amazing way he will finally escape that city – by filming his way out! and Warren Zevon’s stunning way to use songwriting to mitigate the inevitable,
Well, I went to the doctor
I said, “I’m feeling kind of rough”
He said, “I’ll break it to you, son”
Your shit’s fucked up.”
I said, “my shit’s fucked up?”
Well, I don’t see how-“
He said, “The shit that used to work-
It won’t work now.”
