my kind of goth

In the class they did a presentation on Leonard Cohen’s I’m Your Man. When the student got to Jazz Police he explained because English is not his first language, he does not understand phrases like “jazz police”. I asked the class what they thought t meant. The first student, for whom also English is a second language, asked if the lyric is about being a criminal. I said no not really. The next student who was born and raised here, said it probably has to do with being in Jail because First We Take Manhattan had to do with being in jail. I shrugged, sorry Leonard. A third chimed in when he formerly went to music school there were a lot of snobs and they were jazzers and they looked down at whoever didn’t know jazz. Then the goth girl, one of two women in a class of fifteen men, said I bet he’s talking about elites.
