My cousin is 96 years old. If my father was alive he would have turned 100 this year. They were friends since childhood. I called him recently recalling how Gershwin and straight ahead jazz were important to him. I wanted to share I’ve been practicing standards and see how he and his wife are, she too mid 90s. Same as my mother. He saw Bill Evans play with Ella Fitzgerald he told me and how amazing it was. Ella Fitzgerald had a pretty tough early life but one time reading about her, led me to the Boswell Sisters. Something about them, Mildred Bailey and Edith Piaf always makes me imagine Mary Margaret O’Hara grew up in a house where they were always on in the background.
