I started a song trying to not do things the way I usually do. Stemming from all the situations I put students in to write stream of consciously. I worked on this without rhyme or structure, just addressing the subject in free association way. Editing comes after. Like the book I’m expected to finish for school, now about 30k words, a reasonable accomplishment for me anyway. I was on tour with Blue Rodeo, went to see I Love You To Death in a theatre in Calgary in the afternoon, only about twenty others sitting there but I was the only one laughing. It is a strange experience realizing you are the only one finding what is on the screen funny, my laughter was loud. Joan Plowright, River Phoenix, Tracey Ullman, Kevin Kline, Keanu Reeves and William Hurt. I was losing my mind unlike nobody else in Calgary that afternoon. Probably thought I was from Toronto. The song is about William Hurt because I loved him and miss him.
