Though he is no doubt humbled by the quality of Juno talent out there \u00a0Kyp has written an inspiring canon of work covering the heart and the heart attack – which is what brings my ears to attention for his song Chemical Valley. \u00a0Sagacious reflections of Sarnia and “unexplainable” \u00a0higher rates of cancer there. The nerve of Canadian music writers asking\u00a0 “How come there aren’t any protest singers?” Followed by\u00a0 fluff pieces about one or two current bands who’s “protest” music is so cryptic people didn’t know what their songs were about.<\/p>\n
I was born inside a city where just about everyone you saw
\nWas workin\u2019 in the factory just like their ma and pa
\nInside multicorporations where their destinies were bought
\nAnd the profits shipped across the river to the Bank of America
\nThe factories fed off the land and people of the place
\nTo produce their products profitably, disposing of the waste
\nWithout fear of any consequence, they threw it all away
\nInto the purity of the soil and the river and the lake<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\nChemical Valley Chemical Valley Chemical Valley<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\nEveryone was so surprised to witness the results
\nOf twenty years of flooding the atmosphere with chemicals
\nSuddenly the fish are dying, the birds fall from the trees
\nThe environment is twisted by mutation and deformity
\nThere\u2019s people sick and dyin\u2019, and no-one knows what for
\nThere\u2019s babies dyin\u2019 in the womb before they\u2019re even born
\nThe people live their lives in fear of the sickness and disease
\nIn the water that they drink, the food they eat, the air they breathe<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\nChemical Valley Chemical Valley Chemical Valley<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\nThe workers in the factories, they all say
\n\u201cI don\u2019t know nothin\u2019 about it, don\u2019t look at me that way
\nI just wanna do my job and collect my pay
\nAnd I\u2019d just as soon forget about it by the end of the day\u201d
\nThe owners of the factories, they tell you just the same
\n\u201cWe\u2019ve been doin\u2019 it for years, we didn\u2019t know it\u2019d be this way\u201d
\nBut they knew it all along, they just decided to ignore it

\nYou can bet your ass the government ain\u2019t gonna interfere
\nWhen they stand so much to lose, when anyone can see
\nThe corporations are so crucial to the state economy
\nThey just slap some fines upon the factories for their crimes
\nThe factories pay them off and chalk it up to expenses every time
\nThen they carry on doin\u2019 damage to the universe
\nThat a million years of nature\u2019s healing could not begin to reverse<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\nChemical Valley Chemical Valley Chemical Valley<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\nCan ya tell me \u2019bout your money, can you tell me what it\u2019s worth?
\nDoes it justify this needless death, this poisoning the earth?
\nHow many people have to die to satisfy your greed?
\nHow much sickness must you spread throughout this world before you see
\nThat you\u2019re gonna have to pay for everything you get someday
\nAnd when your day of darkness comes you\u2019re gonna pay and pay and pay
