When my manager, Don Christensen, went to Midem in 1993, he met a German label and they liked my record, City Of Wood,\u00a0 and signed me. This resulted in an offer to make a tour of Germany (and France). This was great news but considering English wasn’t their first language I brought my drummer. I felt like what distinguished my songs were my lyrics and it wouldn’t make sense to assume Germans or French people would understand so having my drummer meant we could make a more musically interesting show. It never occurred to me that they might just like the texture whether or not they understood each line lyrically. It turned out they were confused that I didn’t sound like the singer songwriter they heard on City of Wood.
