The session was inspiring she is very creative and open plus her groovy house was in the middle of the country somewhere near Kingston, many instruments and nicely organized spaces for doing the work of recording. I was also making a video then based on snippets of found poetry and she knew an Emily Dickinson piece by heart, “I Died For Beauty”, eventually it started the video, not sure she ever saw the finished piece.

There was a showcase for her at Ultrasound in 1990-something, there was a buzz about her, enough that the president of Warner, Stan Kulin, was there. Other record company people too, one guy from Raw Energy Records was getting tipsy and during her 3rd song yelled “show us your titz”. Sarah didn’t notice or just kept playing. He isn’t around anymore but Sarah still is.

Something Stan said to her stood out after the show was over and people were socializing, “if you sign with us you’ll get a fairer count than if you sign with the Americans”. I liked that, felt like I was an extra in Get Shorty watching Chili Palmer make his move. Loved the admission that business people cheat, what else does it mean if you offering a fairer count? And the insinuation was cute, his side would be more fair because of his word. Makes me think of all the crying about downloading and streaming as though there were good old days, as though musicians haven’t always had other people taking percentages or positioned to control the revenue stream and divide up who gets what, people are suppose to trust the company’s accounting…because it’s their word.

There was a show called Real Time in the 90s on CBC and I was approached to suggest some ideas. One idea they liked was a Kingston Surf Party. We got together, Sarah on guitar and voice, Gord Downie on voice, Mike O’Neil from the Inbreds on bass and voice and Grant Etienne from 13 Engines on drums and me on organ and piano. It wasn’t very good, I didn’t know what to do or how else to facilitate than just turn on the recording machine. Just hoped throwing a bunch of good music people connected to Kingston in a room was enough but everyone was so polite, music was meandering and tentative. I have a copy, it isn’t long and I don’t think it even aired. Years before Gord’s health problems it occurred to me that sampling from this recording might be a way to make something out of it. Thought I could take samples and create beats out of that and then farm it out to Gord, Sarah and Mike and see if they might write lyrics over it. That might make a better ending to something that only had a beginning and a middle.
