Trying to produce records for a couple former students perhaps even 3, whatever I can fit. Part of the exchange, besides enjoying their music or co-writing, besides arranging it to my satisfaction is that they too appreciate the effort. Being in a position where they have no other opportunities no doubt is partly why they do. Many other instances where the exchange isn’t like this, when I step back and try to figure out the differences seems one view is about positions of power. If I produce someone who is hiring me then it is more an employee\/ employed relationship…this still is the dynamic when I’m producing students who work at McDonalds but something about these conditions makes us both more polite. If something takes off power takes off too. That’s the big unknown that often changes everything.
