When I was 22 I had keys to Trinity St. Paul’s church. I had a job and our office was in the basement. There were 7 other companies with offices in that church. Often after hours I opened it up with different music friends and we would have long improvisation sessions with the 9 ft piano in the sanctuary. Access to the church was for our offices not playing the piano, sort of like asking a child in the hot sun to guard a bunch of purple popsicles. Those were unique evenings, echoey empty church, blue creation themed stained glass, 400 empty seats between the floor and the balconies.\u00a0Then some rotten loser broke into one of the offices and stole petty cash. They started an investigation, I threw away my key. Didn’t want to risk becoming a suspect if they caught me now doing what I knew was unsanctioned. I knew the score, might not be believed and might be convenient to put the blame on me.\u00a0Was once accused of breaking a window when I was a kid. I didn’t do it but my friend’s mother thought it was me and she called my mother and then my mother asked me in that tone of voice that meant everyone already concluded guilty. Never felt believed. The truth maybe is only for you anyway, like if you wrote a good song that is its own reward. Could never get behind people citing karma as magical mitigator. \u00a0Pretty sure many a Trump or Jerry Lewis move through world feeling terrific about themselves then one last extended belch and die, no regrets.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
