There was a woman who performed magic tricks at Smokey Joe’s open stage at 519 Community Centre on Friday nights long ago. Stella Louise also played Johnny Cash songs on banjo or did impressionistic dances to prerecorded music (Jimi Hendrix or the Doors), but on nights when she only planned magic she asked me to accompany her. I didn’t know much straight ahead piano music and she knew it, “that was why I asked you” she said, “make it weird, please”.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

She had a tarot deck, the Marseilles deck, and liked to read cards. She predicted Blue Rodeo would take off. I don’t believe in these things but she said it before anyone else. She even predicted I would quit when it no longer was a democracy; 2 for 2. She told me a con artist would become President of America, I thought that a joke, guess some clairvoyants have 30 year delay. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Each December Fat Alberts has a last show of the year doubles as a pot luck xmas party. I went to it this evening and brought my daughter. I was prepared to leave right away if she was bored because there weren’t other kids but she found it enjoyable. Lots of people asked her how old she was and if she played music. I told her she could perform there in the future, perhaps Mary Had A Little Lamb or maybe dancing to Sur Ma Route as she does nightly in the living room. She’s looked at me as though I was Brian Epstein. Ed was there too, a rare appearance. And while talking about old times he said Stella Louise died 10 years ago, alone at Toronto Western Hospital, I didn’t know.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The piano was against a wall, my back was to her so I couldn’t tell if I was enabling or foiling the presentation. She didn’t care, “it’s all gravy kid”. One of the older people confidentially told me she had started over after escaping a dark and violent situation. People who felt certain the end was near and beat the odds tend to speak that way, “it’s all gravy kid.” I made it weird, blues in two keys, the left hand in D and the right hand in Eb or slow intervals without a sense of downbeat or washes of clusters with the sustain pedal depressed.
