At the Tranzac auction and performance (money to soundproof the bleed between 3 performance rooms) there was one item I really wanted but couldn’t justify with so many other expenses in my life. A unique painting by John Abrams. He took a box saw maybe 6 inches by 12 inches and painted a clarinet upon the blade, running the length of the blade. There is a milky sky like background behind the clarinet, I suppose in order to make the clarinet colours show up better. There is also his signature paint drips on the handle which he intentionally places in the works he does during the last decade that reference moments in cinema. Colin Puffer leaned into my ear while I was hanging it, “musical saw eh?” I hadn’t even considered that.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A woman I know bid the highest amount and I told her I wished I could buy it too. She said if you want we could split the cost and each keep it 6 months of the year. That was a great idea, I agreed. Moments later someone else placed a higher bid. I was in charge of the auction and approached the new high bidder, asked if she was a fan of John. She said she never heard of him. I said “Guess you just like it a lot.” She said she wanted to buy it as a present for her friend, she pointed to a seated man wearing Ray Charles glasses and holding a tall thin cane. “He’s blind and it’s tactile” she said. At first I thought this was wrong since people should admire looking at it but a couple moments later I realized it’s totally fair and besides, whether or not it looks good in his house it’ll always feel great.
