I was working with some kids and playing accordion. Later, a few wanted to touch it. They were fascinated. They\u2019d press a note, I\u2019d move the bellows, and the thing would sing. Then more kids appeared, each wanting a turn, like popcorn. One confident girl pressed a key, but I stopped moving the bellows. Nothing happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt stopped working,\u201d she said, wide-eyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI think you broke it,\u201d I told her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her face froze. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t my fault.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWell,\u201d I said, \u201cI\u2019ll have to tell your parents they owe me a new accordion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She gasped, then caught the smirk. \u201cNo way that\u2019s true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhy didn\u2019t it break for the other kids?\u201d I asked. \u201cThey played the same notes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI only touched one!\u201d she said, now half-defending, half-grinning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMaybe you touched it too hard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She crossed her arms, thought for a moment, then said, \u201cI can fix it. Move your arms again like before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I did. She pressed a note, the sound came out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere,\u201d she said, triumphant. \u201cI fixed it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
