Marking final papers, final songs. One student surprised me with how brilliant was their song and essay. Started by imitating something then realized it could be more unique by doing such and such, then had an epiphany about not worrying about the perception of musical critics. Another student writes negatively about the sound of his singing voice throughout the essay. Some people write like that, about their own creations yet need to go on about how bad they think they are… that’s the tone throughout even though it is enjoyable and interesting music. His voice reminds me of Calvin Johnson. I add a link to Beat Happening and later include the Modern Lovers and B52s to point out others who don’t necessarily sound like the mainstream and have beautiful music accomplishments. There is another student, who didn’t hand in the final paper which is worth 20% of their mark. She has other incomplete assignments and yet a valuable contributor to class discussions. Chatty, insightful, perky, musical. Tried a few times to make a bridge, to know she could still finish everything even though it is late. Seems there is no reaching her. I think she has a philosophical dilemma about the point of being here, something like that my guess.
