There was a teacher who contained inspiring musical knowledge, it was obvious to all yet his nature brought on lots of disappointment. He had affairs with students and engaged in humiliating stunts towards others. It was like he practised mind games for a living. One year, a talented woman from the East, played so well he closed his eyes and tilted his head, paying more attention to her than the others which everyone noticed and even told her later. He admired her playing but she didn’t care, she came for the teaching, which she obtained, then moved on. When he called her outside of class to rendez vous, she didn’t return the calls. I admired her and noticed others suffer under mind games including perhaps him most of all, about his self importance. I had coffee with him a few years ago and realized now, with a lot of distance, how much smaller his affect was or maybe how much larger my not giving a shit was. I don’t know where she ended up but she had a one friend in class, Rita, I sometimes run into and I saw her last week and asked what ever happened to the woman from the East.
