A young man from Peterborough who played the military snare in a marching band attended a jazz concert of players from Detroit. The drummer from the visiting band, played so brilliantly that the military drummer, who had started to experiment with playing in rock bands, decided to go into dentistry instead. On his deathbed, many years later, his granddaughter asked him if he had any regrets in life, to which he said yeah, wish I never saw that jazz band from Detroit…and those were his last words. The granddaughter took this to mean he hated jazz instead of what he really meant, that he wished he never quit playing the drums or did not waste life comparing himself to others. To honour his memory she decided to hate jazz and went out of her way to avoid it, wouldn’t allow it to be played in the house. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
