Planning an assignment in advance, for next year’s songwriting class. An assignment that excites me, think it would resonate with the students, but then I took a break, ran some errands and while listening on random to my library a staggering and transformative song came on. This would be an even better assignment, total cinematic journey. Wondered how to position next year’s students to have the kind of experience I just had, but moments later realized life doesn’t work that way. You can’t control what moves someone. They might have a cathartic experience with a Michael Bolton song. The truth is it’s fair, taste requires no certification. Nonetheless, made my day to savour this song and its English, German, Russian and its many layers of secret police, political corruption, music business, feminism, plus opera, pop, punk and on top of that, the smart low tech accomplishments of the production and creativity of that enigma called Nina Hagen. Amazing that Van Gogh never sold a painting and I bet none of next year’s students will raise their hands – who here knows the songs of Nina Hagen? .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
