As David started to play more with his older friend Kunle, who challenged his sense of inside and outside, and as he ventured more and more into outness, which wasn’t previously a destination in his soloing, he found himself becoming frightened and eventually he stopped showing up for the jam sessions. He shared his feelings with his best friend Sarah, told her it was like if he followed this new thing he might lose his mind and compromise his relationships with others. He didn’t want to take that risk. Sarah asked how he could lose his mind? David said the more he played with Kunle, the more lost he felt. He expected her to commiserate but she started to laugh. It’s not funny he said. But that’s not losing your mind she blurted back, that sounds like growing a new part. But what if I can’t find my way back? What if I’m changed forever?
