There’s this piece I started some weeks ago. It goes off often inside my head and I can’t recall how it got there. Happens throughout the day, this is a sign I like. It’s in B flat. I remember looking at the piano before starting it and asking myself where should I go, where should I start. Not C, not G not F. Not E flat, not G sharp. Goldilocks looking for the best porridge and that’s when B flat did a little dance and felt just right. Trying to keep a certain equity in mind with pieces like this. If the right can do it then the left must also or at least try to. When you try to replay how you did something in one hand and translate the movement to the opposite hand, it doesn’t necessarily work melodically, but still to try improvising with similar shapes is sometimes reward enough. I also like the simultaneous experience of not being able to do something with your weaker hand and yet knowing it’s just as good as the other hand, where there’s a will there’s a way. If I can do a lay up with a basketball with my right hand I must be able to do it as a leftie too.
