the brain has a part within itself that is what you are identified with. it’s the part you call bob or stella or giovanni. you are absolutely convinced you are bob or stella or giovanni and the brain is an add on item tabulating all sorts of other things within the structure of body but it is the other way around. the brain not only tabulates all those things but it also generates the you who believes you are you, the brain also positions you to believe you are controlling things but you aren’t and the brain likes this relationship even though it risks allowing you to destroy everything, but that’s another story.
you talk to yourself, you tell yourself no more cookies or do more sit ups or do more practise or less anger or no more driving fast or no more being late. the thing is who are you addressing when you do that, if presumably you are in control and have free will? if you were in control and if you did have free will then why talk to yourself about how you wish you were next time? the brain positions itself to believe you are a separate entity and to believe you can change yourself for the better as if what you are is less than what you could be. people are so convinced of that that this idea makes absolutely no sense to most of them.
there was a player who could play something amazing in C# but she did it so much it became an auto pilot experience for her. other people were impressed and told her so. she didn’t care, from her point of view it didn’t take any effort to do it but she knew another musician who could play licks that blew her away. she wondered if she was even capable of ever playing as good as the other person. she thought most of the time about the thing she couldn’t do, she couldn’t help but be that way, the thing she actually was didn’t interest her as much and if someone tried to point that out she would make like woody allen with christopher walken, sorry dwyane i’m due back on planet earth,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
