Rewriting the songwriting course, one of the previous assignments is a reflection paper related to songs that resulted in imprisonment or release from jail. I use John Sinclair by John Lennon, Zombie by Fela Kuti, Mother of God Drive Putin Away by Pussy Riot and Hurricane by Bob Dylan. But this year it occurs to me, in light of the fact that the papers often don’t impress me because many students write as though they spent their time on Wikipedia and Google, so instead I’m going to ask them to write a song after they study the assignment. Their song has to be either about an issue that might get them into trouble or else about someone who they believe should be released from jail. At least three verses, two choruses and a bridge.
