One of the new pieces I’m working on stems from taking a gesture I played many times and inverting it plus putting that inversion in a different key than the original source. That in itself creates space for new opportunities. I added triads moving diatonically in root or first inversion and it reminds me of Creed Taylor records or sometimes gestures I heard in Herbie Hancock records but I’m stuck on where to go next, a lot of what I’m doing reminds me of other things but my desire remains not being reminded of what I can already do. The other night Neil Young was in my dream, Daryl Hannah was with him, of course she was. After he started playing harmonica, animals came running through the campground we were in. Many different types of animals. One was small and it lay on top of a larger galloping cow sized creature, the way cats curl up to sleep. The thing I liked most when I woke up was that I saw animals that weren’t recognizable. Sort of like dogs or raccoons or wolves but none of them specifically. I try to practise music in my head sometimes but it isn’t satisfying, doesn’t feel like I’m really accomplishing what results from the physical experience plus if I’m just imagining I can’t tell if I made an error. I saw Grover Washington Jr. in Los Angeles when I was a teenager. He was on Creed Taylor records. It was very awesome. I already had Mister Magic in Winnipeg. The performance place was called the Santa Monica Civic Centre or Auditorium and there was a sea of people. It felt like my older brother and I were the only white ones. This was alternate universe to Winnipeg, and I imagined black people in Winnipeg must have this experience too, way more than my altered state this evening.
