It was recommended to me partly because the story I’m working on has to do with revenge. It’s a good book, an important book and a book with surprises and many thoughts about revenge. I once read an interview with Quentin Tarantino where he said his recent films were tied together by revenge fantasies. I could see that. I’m not one of those people who do not need revenge. I admire them for their saintliness but have no idea how they do it. I thought is was a little weird that Chuck Berry “needed” to be paid before taking the stage but I also get it. The pain of being ripped off, of being betrayed or humiliated is deep. Maybe revenge instinctually seems like payback, an eye for an eye, at the same time nothing ever pays back the thing that first hurt, except moving on. The thing I liked most about Miriam Toews’ book was that the narrator was an unexpected character, a man who had the job of recording the accounts of many women. It made the reader wonder about his position and his thoughts and that tied a whole other ribbon around the the story. In a way that’s what’s necessary to move on, to see or remember the zillions of other dimensions simultaneously existing. You might want to kill the bee that stung you to teach it a lesson but it’s also part of a colony, part of a hive, part of an ecosystem, part of pollination and not as simple as kill that fucking bee because it stung me. You could also just stay in revenge mode and be part of the dimension that can’t see past that space. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Just finished Miriam Toews’ book Women Talking.
