So many ghosts around every part of it. Eventually everyone finds this out in life, you have memories of previous lives you lived and the artifacts dissolve. There’s the spot where Accudub’s duplication business made all the independent musician’s releases, there’s where the Leslie Spit Treeo lived and the city of Toronto had the problem of removing lead from the soil, there’s where the Holiday Tavern was and where Guns n’ Roses played and I assumed they were a caricature which indeed they were, there’s the warehouses that housed many artists, there’s where the mechanic told me I had green goo in my engine and I found out for the first time when one owns a vehicle they are supposed to change their oil every few thousand kilometers, there’s where the old lady with the same surname as Madonna had her restaurant and I felt sorry for her because it was mostly empty and she wasn’t young enough to put much more into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But last night at the Wheat Sheaf tavern, it was no different than playing any show in a bar and it’s a beautiful thing even if I was the only one wearing a mask and who forgot earplugs. It’s Bathurst and King but not the one I came from. Nice to be the sideman, nice to fulfill the job description, nice to balance the song hopefully adding taste and not over bearing and hopefully making sense when they yell your name to solo and not fuck up any quiet parts I’m unaware of. Until I’m doing it, I don’t realize I miss it. The density of young people, intoxication, exclusive cars and many police were the current story that night, different than my story but still writing all the same. I wonder how another version of me, if I was born 20 years ago, might navigate these conditions like people today, if in fact it’s ever any different for anyone in their 20’s.
