He has a beautiful voice and the whole class was kind of stunned when he sung. He loved the class and this love confused him about why he is earning a marketing degree. He also has a part time job at McDonalds, the all-night shift where he experiences a lot of Canadian crazy. He and his girlfriend live in a tiny furnitureless room in a house. The details of his Toronto is very different than mine and our exchange increases my understanding of his and many other international student experiences.

Our class finished two months ago but recently he asked to meet. He had some anxiety and doubt and wanted my thoughts. At the coffee shop on Roncesvalles, his first question was is this downtown? He’s been in Toronto two years but no idea where exactly downtown starts and stops. He wishes somehow he worked in the music business. Even if he was selling instruments for a living, he would feel better than his new second job filling shampoos in a factory where he isn’t allowed to use headphones to pass the monotonous nine hour shift. I didn’t have magic answers but asked him to maintain a daily journal. I think other people would enjoy reading his unique perspective. I offered to call someone at Long and McQuade and find out how he gets an interview. I also offered to take him and his girlfriend on a downtown tour sometime, share with them Toronto through my eyes. He wrote back today. It was an amusing email where he sorted himself out. After, I asked if I could post it on my blog and attach his email. I said there’s a chance someone might read all of this and have ideas for him about his desire and ambition, who knows? He said please do. His name is Sudip
sudipsletterbox@gmail.com

It was really nice meeting you yesterday.
