Joe had a great dislike of God believers, religious preachers, though he did believe in the Earth. I think he might have considered the Earth as God. Frankly, doesn’t everything come from the Earth whether or not Ian McKellen is hiding behind the trees with a wand? There is a painting he did which is still visible on his website, where he stands on the Earth holding a stop sign, appealing to humanity to realize our common mother, guarding the planet from destructive forces. As for his actual mother, he named the laneway between the highway and his front door after his parents. A very cute sign declared you were walking on the Elsie and Harry laneway. When I lived in the country, he told me many times how smart I was to live outside of smogopolis. Jack was from ECW press, they released Joe’s books. It was through attending those release parties that I too befriended Jack which led to the publication of my book, Music Lessons. Joe sometimes put it like this, “Bob, I don’t God.” Jack was similar and a couple times told me about ongoing joke exchanges between himself and Joe. Even Holocaust jokes, which I didn’t know existed. Apparently in their last conversation, the day before Joe’s life ended, he made Joe laugh – Guy dies, goes to heaven and once there he meets God and tells him a Holocaust joke.
