Sam told me one time he was annoyed hearing a musician on tour from Vancouver, because she was imitating me. He was pissed off about it. For a second I was too because I believed him and the anger he encouraged me to feel. He was my friend, he was looking out for me. I sort of like that he was pissed off but a few seconds later I realized none of it exists. First off I don’t know if she was trying to imitate me and if she wasn’t then the whole thing is only a comment on Sam’s perception. Secondly, if she was, so what? I’ve heard a lot of people imitate other people. I got into Casey’s class by playing my Jarrett imitation. It was good enough for him to get up from the couch and look over my shoulder. But it’s unsatisfying to notice an imitation instead of an original. It isn’t a threat, it’s a disappointment.
