The album presentation in last week’s class was pretty good. The three students presenting did their homework. At one point, one other member of the class explained she understood the lyric in question differently. She said it was about a mother daughter relationship and she added it is a distinct Portuguese mother-daughter thing. What is? That the mother is expecting the daughter to be something she never will be. I thought to myself isn’t that a Jewish mother-daughter thing? An Italian mother-daughter thing? A quadriplegic, non-binary, Asian, black, double jointed Newfoundland mother-daughter thing? Isn’t it also a mother-son thing and a father-son thing and a father-daughter thing? I looked around the room curious if anyone else might express that view on their own. Nope. I acted like Sir Paul and let it be.
