I gave an artist talk at the University of Waterloo. On my way there wondered what exactly I would do because this was fine arts not music. I have made films and videos but they relate to my music. Am I an imposter talking to visual artists? I broke it up into four parts only one was about songwriting. I stopped and asked for questions a few times. Crickets at first but soon they had more questions than I anticipated and that felt swell. I liked the question best from the woman who asked about what it is like when I’m not improvising vs. when I am. I liked it for the problem of replying there is no such thing as not improvising. She doesn’t know what I will next say and I know not what she will ask next. I like the cul-de-sac of trying to explain things that have bad odds of making sense like choosing dissonant sounds in certain music, knowing some people will think these mistakes and pity me.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
