Many significant pianists point to the Barry Harris scale. It is just a major 6th chord and a diminished chord. Working at all four inversions seems a good start. A bit of a Rubic’s cube considering certain inversions are more confusing ergonomically than others. I try using the weakest finger, the ring finger, but for power and speed the brain wants the middle finger to overtake what “looks” like something more suited for the ring. Common problem. Everyone has to decide which road, same final destination. Footage of Hendrix never using his pinky proves it. As painful as it might look to a trained guitarist he pulls it off. This is how he trained. That’s the real point, will one do it ten thousand times and make it autopilot? The other thing I like spending time at is playing triads diatonically then with each inversion associated with the triad. It is a simple thing to realize and practise and yet I never did. So many voicings are immediately understood that so many pianists I like utilize. Trying to take just one key at a time and spend a whole session just playing these things in D or just in Bflat. That part never ceases to amaze me, how the brain realizes it has booted up an app called B flat or C sharp and adhere to it even though the keys before the eyes look the same. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Trying to figure out what to practise to get the most new information into my hands.
