There is an interview online with Keith Jarrett where he tells a story about playing as a youth and complaining he wasn’t good enough to finish the piece and he said so to his mother. She replied “can you play the first note?” and Jarrett said yes and she said “can you play the second note?” and Jarrett again answered yes and she said “then you can play this piece” and Jarrett smiles and the interviewer laughs and Jarrett adds “I had pretty good parents”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My favourite moment is when the interviewer asks “Keith what is the difference between playing with a bass player like Gary Peacock or Charle Hayden? Do you play different things when you’re playing with them or do they play different things?” Jarrett answers, “Well everybody in music is supposed to be there..supposed to portray who they are when they play.
