The cashier laughs when I have sweet white rice among my groceries. When I ask why she says she has never eaten that rice insinuating through her giggles it is below her. I ask what rice do you like? She says the one in my country. I get it at my country’s grocery store in Scarborough. What country is that, I ask? Tamil she says. Our rice is black. I ask do you like basmati? She laughs again and says if you eat basmati or the white one which I selected you are still hungry after. I am curious, I don’t know what she means about being hungry after but her confidence about her reality makes me want to find the Tamil grocery and check for myself. I always like my exchanges with this woman. You never know who is teaching you something and who is wasting your time. It was only through conversations with students that I stopped to check J.
