Reading notation is a gift. It gives you access to work you would never otherwise touch, to a language you can share with strangers. Like being handed a set of keys that open rooms built long before you arrived. But when reading becomes the only way in, the space you\u2019re standing in begins to narrow. You start to move from room to room without ever stepping outside, forgetting there was air beyond the walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Improvisation isn\u2019t a lack of knowledge. Playing from within doesn\u2019t mean turning your back on discipline. Discipline, at its best, is like a fence around a field: it keeps things from wandering too far, but it isn\u2019t the field itself. Or it\u2019s a well-worn path through the woods, useful, reliable but meaningless if you never look up and notice where you are.
