Just an email informing him the Museum of Former Intentions was no longer financially sustainable. He drove out to the industrial fringe where storage lockers are like obedient little coffins. Same metal doors. Same combinations. Same illusion that everything inside mattered in the way it once did. Opened it. Amplifiers. Cables. Patch cords. Rack units from the age of knobs, each promising authority. A mixer that once required a small committee to carry. Boxes labelled in handwriting of a younger man with stronger opinions and weaker evidence.

He picked up a cable. It was the wrong cable for everything. Inside the box were more wrong cables, carefully preserved in case the future turned out to require precisely the wrong thing. That’s when it hit him. It was a shrine of hypothetical necessity, not storage. The manager appeared, High Priest of Square Footage.

“You’ll need to clear it out today.”

Today. A guy who thought vintage gear might be like buried treasure with a power supply. Each object left with a new owner and new mythology.

“This one toured with me.”
“This saved a show.”
“This used to matter.” “This was midi.”

By mid-afternoon the ecosystem collapsed. Just loose artifacts without a narrative to justify their continued existence. He sat on the concrete floor with the last survivors.

It occurred to him he had spent years confusing accumulation with preparedness. The idea being: if you own enough equipment, you are ready for anything. Which is comforting until you realize that “anything” rarely includes a twelve-channel mixer from 1995 and a drawer full of adapters for machines that died before the internet announced itself.

A young musician picked up a small amp.

“I’ve been looking for something like this.”

“Take it,” he said.

By evening the locker was nearly empty. A few cables. A broken stand. Manuals for devices that no longer exist, written in a language nobody speaks.

He closed the door.

Driving away, he realized the music had never required this. The sound had always been available without the infrastructure of hoarded possibility.

What he had been storing was fear.

That night he sat at a piano, played with none of his usual technological backup systems. Nothing was missing. The kind of conclusion that makes you suspicious of everything you’ve ever carefully saved.

He lost the storage locker on a Tuesday, which is the day the universe reserves for quiet corrections.
