Perhaps two musicians, each growing a little invisible with age, could become visible together. He imagined conversation on long drives, audiences discovering two different approaches to the same instrument. He imagined the strange fraternity that comes from carrying amplifiers into church basements and theatres no architect had intended for music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The receipts proved another story. The hotel. The mileage. The rental piano. The tuner. The extra microphone. The musician who had proposed the tour noticed something odd. Expenses were no longer shared according to agreement but according to convenience. Whenever there was an unexpected bill, it somehow belonged to both of them. Whenever there was an unexpected advantage, it somehow belonged to only one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are people who divide a pie by first asking whether everyone is hungry. There are others who first ask whose knife it is. Some duets sound beautiful because two people are making music.
