Play one note.

Wait until it becomes
someone else’s note.

Play another.

Do not listen
to the instrument.

Listen to the distance
between the instrument
and the person listening.

Imagine a piano
at the bottom of the ocean.

Play it.

If you cannot hear it,
play more quietly.

Ask your left hand
what it remembers.

Do not correct it.

Ask your right hand
what it wants.

Do not believe it.

Put both hands together.

Wait.

Play the song
your mother heard
before you were born.

If you don’t know the song,
you are ready.

Make a mistake.

Water it every morning.

When it becomes a tree,
sit underneath it
and listen.

Give one note
to someone you dislike.

Give two notes
to a stranger.

Keep none
for yourself.

Play until you disappear.

Continue playing.

When the concert is finished,
leave the piano open.

Perhaps the room
has something to say.
