You cannot decide beforehand what the other musician is about to play and then congratulate yourself for responding to it. Then you are playing with a person who exists mainly in your head. Improvising depends upon listening. Innocent until proven guilty is supposed to mean something. Asking what happened, what evidence exists and whether the process was fair is not the same as dismissing the complainants. It means we don’t allow suspicion to wear the judge\u2019s robe and finish the job. Margaret Atwood did not say Steven Galloway had never done anything wrong. In the music community somebody gets called difficult, selfish, or unsafe. Soon the description becomes evidence. Any other negative exchanges are added to the file. Anything fair or contradictory is removed and the person who asks to hear the other side is treated as if they joined the accused person\u2019s band and are selling their merch each night. But listening is only listening, it is not agreement. It means delaying the final chord until we know what song we are actually playing.
